Appointments may be booked to see a doctor or nurse by telephoning 01458 833666 during surgery open hours.
Although we answer several lines on our main telephone system, they are very busy first thing in the morning. Calls are held in a stacking system and are answered in the order they are received. If you can leave non-urgent calls until later in the morning we should be able to deal with them more quickly.
Monday is our busiest day. If your requirement is routine and non-urgent try telephoning on another day. We will be able to respond to your needs more quickly.
In order to process your request for an appointment in an appropriate manner, our reception team may ask you for a brief reason for the appointment. Please help them to help you by providing us with this information.
You may also sign up to use the online appointment booking service provided by EMIS. Once you have informed the practice you are interested in using this facility, we will send you a letter together with instructions on how to complete the registration process.
Across the UK, the need for appointments with a GP is far greater than the number of appointments available. Glastonbury Surgery is no exception. To address this we offer a balance of same day and book ahead appointments with the doctors, and same day appointments with the nurse practitioners.
When you contact the surgery for an appointment the receptionist will ask for some brief information about why you are calling. They may advise you of alternative services that could be more appropriate for your needs, for example redirection to Pharmacy or the Minor Injuries Unit. For all same day appointment requests you will be asked for some information about why you need an appointment – this is essential for the clinician to prioritise your care.
We closely monitor our appointment booking process and regularly review to ensure that it is achieving the goals and expectations that we have set.
Please click here to download a copy of the patient leaflet “Who to see at Glastonbury Surgery”, or ask our reception team for a printed copy.
The practice encourages patients to telephone for advice when a face-to-face appointment is not necessary. If you wish to speak to a doctor please telephone reception before 12:00 and book a telephone consultation. The doctor will return your call at the end of surgery.
Our nurse Practitioners are qualified to fully assess, diagnose, treat or refer patients who attend the surgery for same day appointments and can also issue prescriptions.
If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.
National Improved Access Scheme for GP Surgeries
In future GP surgeries in England will increasingly be working together to provide services for their patients. There will also be more professionals like pharmacists, specialist nurses and physiotherapists working closely with family doctors. This is partly because there is a shortage of GPs in many parts of the country, but it also means you are more likely to be able to book an appointment to see the right person to help with your problem when you first contact the surgery.
Somerset has been chosen by NHS England to introduce a new scheme that will allow you to make an appointment to see a health professional in a GP practice outside the usual working hours of GP surgeries. The scheme works by getting a group of GP practices together so that they can open up in turn at the new times. Our group includes the Glastonbury and Street practices.
Each group of surgeries will be offering some appointments on every weekday evening between 6.30pm and 8.00pm, and also on Saturday mornings. If you need an appointment at one of those times, you can either ask for a particular day, meaning you would then have your appointment at whichever surgery is open on that day, or you could ask for your own surgery and then book an appointment for whenever it is their turn to be open.
There will be small number of appointments bookable on the day for things that are important, but not medically urgent. To access on the day appointments on a Saturday morning please call 07731 627 451. This number will only be answered between 8am and 11am on Saturday mornings.
Outside surgery opening times urgent health problems will still be dealt with by the 111 call line and Somerset Doctors Urgent Care.
