Asthma
The practice nurses offer routine checks for all patients with asthma. It is important that you have a yearly review if you are taking inhalers.

 

 
Blood pressure measurement
You can check your own blood pressure using an automatic machine in the nurse's area at the Health Centre. Your doctor may ask you to take some readings at home. Machines are available for loan from reception at Saffron and the Health Centre

 

 
Blood tests
If you require a blood test please make a "clinic 1" appointment. Blood clinics take place daily at all our surgeries. If you take warfarin and need to have an INR check this can be done at the INR clinics on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the Health Centre.

 

Breast screening
There is a recall system in place for women to attend the mobile breast-screening unit when it visits Frome. Women aged between 50-64 years of age are called at 3 yearly intervals. If you require more frequent screening please discuss this with your doctor.

 

 

 
Cervical smears
Please make a 10 minute appointment with the Practice Nurse (NOT your doctor) for your smear. It is preferable to take the smear during the middle of your cycle. You will be recalled at 5 yearly intervals, unless you have had any previous problem. If you have had any unexpected bleeding between periods, or any other unexpected belleing it may be advisable to see a doctor.
 
Child health surveillance
Six week developmental checks are carried out by your doctor in surgery. Often this will be done at the same time as your post-natal check. At 8 months children are invited for a check on hearing and vision with a health visitor. Eighteen-month and pre-school checks are no longer routine, but if you are concerned about your child's development please contact a health visitor to arrange a review.

 

 
Contraceptive advice
For advice on contraception and yearly pill checks please make a 10 minute appointment with a practice nurse. Our nurses offer a full range of services including coil fittings and cervical smears

 

 
Counselling
The practice offers a limited counselling service to registered patients. If you feel you need this please discuss it with your GP who will arrange an appointment for assessment.

 

 
Diabetes clinic
We run a weekly clinic for patients with diabetes on Wednesday afternoons. If you have diabetes we will invite you to come to the clinic for a full review at least once a year. It is important you have blood and urine tests at least a week before you come so that the nurse or doctor can advise you about any adjustments you may need to your medication. We try to ensure that you have your yearly retinal photograph taken during your visit to the clinic. Please bring your home monitoring booklet to clinic with you if you have one.

 

 
Ear syringing
If you feel that you need ear syringing, please make an appointment with the practice nurse. Please put eardrops or drops of almond or olive oil, into the affected ear for 3-5 days prior to your appointment. This will soften the wax and make it easier to remove.

 

 
Family planning
All our nurses are trained in family planning and can provide advice and check ups for women using regular contraception. There is a family planning clinic on Thursday afternoons at Lock's Hill Surgery.

 

 
Health education
Evening and daytime sessions are arranged at regular intervals by the practice. Details are available at reception.

 

 
HRT clinic
All doctors will offer advice on HRT and dealing with the menopause. A specialist HRT clinic is offered on alternate months by a GP with a special interest in HRT. We also run evening meetings for women who want to know more about the menopause.

 

 
Immunisation clinic
All children receive appointments for their immunisations at the Health Centre. The immunisation clinics take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. They are run by our immunization nurse, Liz Brown. If you have concerns about immunization please discuss these with your health visitor. (click here for more information)

 

 
Maternity care
We offer antenatal care shared with our midwife colleagues at the Frome Victoria Hospital. Many women choose to have their babies in the local midwife-led unit at the Frome Victoria.

 

 
Medical examinations

If you need a private medical examination for insurance purposes or for the DVLA please contact Sheridan Curtis on 01373 301312.

Note: Sheridan only works Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 8-6 each day

 

 
Menopause clinic
Monthly evening meetings led by a GP and health visitors offering advice, help and support to Patients. Appointments are made in the normal way.

 

 
Minor illness
The practice offers daily telephone advice from our "triage nurse" team for patients who feel they may need medical attention on the same day. The nurse may arrange to see you in surgery or refer you to a GP.

 

 
Minor surgery
Minor surgical procedures are carried out by prior arrangement by doctors and practice nurses.

 

 
Physiotheraphy
Physiotherapy is available at the surgery following referral from your doctor.

 

 
Travel clinic
The practice provides a free travel clinic for both registered and non-registered patients offering all major vaccines currently recommended, including Yellow Fever. You may be charged for certain travel vaccines. First Aid kits specifically designed for overseas travel are available.

 

 
Vasectomy
If you are thinking about this please request an information leaflet and make a joint appointment for yourself and your partner with your doctor. Most vasectomies are carried out in Shepton Mallet Hospital.

 

 
Warfarin monitoring
If you take warfarin and need to have an INR check this can be done at the INR clinics on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the Health Centre.

 

 
Young persons clinic
This is a weekly drop-in clinic for young people who need treatment or advice about sexual health, contraception, eating disorders, drugs, counselling or general health. It is open from 4.30 p.m. every Wednesday at the Health Centre. Entry is through the side door to the left of the main entrance. It is open to all young people, and not just those registered with the practice.

 

 
Asthma & diabetic clinics
Our practice nurses hold weekly diabetes and asthma clinics. Advice from the practice nurses may be obtained at any time by appointment.

 

 
Cervical cytology
Cervical smears can be arranged with a doctor or nurse, [n conjunction with the Somerset and Dorset Health Authority we operate a computerised system to call women between the ages of 24 and 49 for a smear every three years and women between 50 and 64 every five years.

 

 
Child health

Assessment, and advice is carried out by both doctors and health visitors. The key checks are as follows:

  • 6 weeks Developmental check with the doctor.
  • 6 to 9 months Developmental assessment and hearing rest with your health visitor.

Your health visitor will advise you about further routine checks.

 

Child immunisations

Clinics for school-leavers, pre-school children and babies are currently held three times a month on a Wednesday or Thursday.

You will receive notification of an appointment direct from the health authority. Please bring with you to the appointment your Personal Child Health Record (red booklet), your appointment card and your signed consent form.

Counselling service
We offer an in-house counselling service If you need the services of a counsellor please ask your doctor to arrange an appointment or ask at reception for further details.

 

 
Family planning

We offer a complete service during routineappointments with your doctor. This includes arranging for the fitting of intra-uterine contraceptive devices.

Emergency and confidential advice is available at all times.

 

 
Foreign travel

We are able to arrange most vaccinations required for foreign travel. Please consult the practice sufficiently early.

We need at least six weeks' notice prior to departure in order to carry out the mandatory checks required, allow an
appropriate interval between vaccinations if needed, and ensure that you are offered appropriate advice.

Please note that. although most travel vaccinations are available from the surgery at no cost. some drugs such as for malaria prophylaxis have co be purchased by the patient
from a pharmacist (some on a private prescription).

Our practice nurses will give advice where required.

Health promotion

Although all members of the primary healthcareteam are involved In different aspects of health promotion. the health visitors offer individual counselling and support, both face to face and by telephone, as well as a range of group activities and exhibitions designed to help patients help themselves by adopting a healthy lifestylee.

  • advice on alcohol consumption

Influenza & pneumoccal immunisations

We run a flu vaccination programme in October each year and encourage patients aged 65 or over or those of any age suffering from a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, renal disease, or immmunosuppression to attend for an annual vaccination.

We will be sending invitations to these patients to attend a flu clinic and will make special arrangements for those in nursing or long-stay residential homes.

 

 
Maternity

Doctors see patients for antenatal care during normal surgery appointment times.

Antenatal clinics are held by the midwife on Wednesdays and parentcraft classes on Mondays.

The midwife also arranges postnatal care of patients at home as required.

 

 
Minor surgery

Our treatment room is fully equipped for minor procedures carried out under a local anaesthetic. Your own doctor will arrange minor surgery for you if required.

We also offer a minor surgery service for patients referred to us from other GP practices.

Each week Dr ??? conducts a specialist dermatology clinic and Dr ??? holds a vasectomy clinic.

 

 
Other services

The practice also provides the following:

  • Anti-coagulation monitoring (warfarin dose monitoring)
  • Near patient testing (drug monitoring by blood testing)
  • Immediate and First Response Care (GP specialist backup to the emergency ambulance service)

 

 
Test results

Our reception staff are able to advise you whether a result is satisfactory or whether you should consult your doctor.

Please telephone reception between 2:00pm and 4:00pm for results.

All labority tests results are dealt with in strictest confidence.
